Cason J. Callaway arrives Sturgeon Bay for Winter Layup

Over the weekend, Great Lakes Fleet’s Cason J. Callaway arrived in Sturgeon Bay for winter layup, making her the sixth vessel in Sturgeon Bay so far. With the Soo Locks closing for the season on January 15, there should be more arrivals in Sturgeon Bay and Duluth within the next few weeks.

In other Sturgeon Bay news, the cement carrier Alpena will be repaired after the recent fire aboard the ship. The fire caused about $3 million in damage to the ship’s stern section, including the some of the crew’s living quarters. It is unclear whether Alpena will remain in Sturgeon Bay for the remainder of the winter or head to another port for repairs to be completed.

The carferry Badger also departed Sturgeon Bay last week under tow of tugs from the Selvick Towing Company, and arrived in her home port of Ludington, MI, soon after. She was in the drydock receiving her 5-year survey when the Alpena fire occurred, but she was not damaged.
