The 690-foot Interlake steamer Herbert C. Jackson arrived through the Duluth ship canal early Friday morning for winter layup and repowering. The Jackson will have her steam engine replaced with a new, energy-efficient diesel engine at Fraser Shipyards in Superior over the winter. The conversion will be the fourth steam-to-diesel for Interlake – Lee A. Tregurtha, Hon. James L. Oberstar, and Kaye E. Barker were all repowered in Sturgeon Bay between 2006-2012. The Jackson‘s conversion is slated to take about six months at Fraser Shipyards.
I last saw the Jackson at Engineer’s Weekend over the summer.
